Kyle Blanks, a former top prospect of the Padres, has had a huge spring, starting this one off with a .476 average and a home run in 19 at bats. This is a small sample size, but when healthy, Blanks has always hit. It would be very interesting if Blanks were to snatch the right-field job from Wis Venorfia (Will Venable and Chris Denorfia platoon). After three seasons in which the young outfielder was plagued with injuries, Blanks finally could be healthy. During the offseason, the Padres signed Kyle Blanks to a 1 year contract worth about $750,000 to avoid arbitration. Blanks assumed he would be non tendered, and accepted the first offer he received with great enthusiasm I have always been a little too high on Kyle, but the potential has always been there, now if only he could pull off a healthy season...
In other news, Eric Stults has had a poor spring, which excites me. This means we could see young Padres Robbie Erlin, Casey Kelly, and Tyson Ross in the rotation. Stults is one of many pitchers competing for one of three spots in the Padres rotation. Due to an excellent showing last season (8-3 2.91 ERA) manager Bud Black hinted that he has an inside track to make the rotation, but inside track does not mean automatic win!
- Curtis Granderson (10 weeks) and Chris Perez (4 weeks) both have sustained injuries.
- Young prospect Austin Hedges has had a good amount of in-game action this spring.
- Andrew Cashner is on pace to be ready for opening day.
- Reliever Jerry Sullivan was re-assigned to minor league camp.
