|Gyorko, Cabrera, Forsythe, Amarista (Left to right), and Headley (Below)|
(Natural position in italics)
Logan Forsythe (2B-SS-3B)
It is rumored they will give him a shot at the starting SS or 2B job. He is a solid hitter who is still developing, very nice bench piece or slightly below average starter. His natural position is 3B, but he is blocked by Headley and Gyorko.
Chase Headley (3B)
Chase Headley is ON FIRE. He hit two home runs last night to raise his RBI total to 98. A .300 average, 30 home runs, 120 RBI, and 20SB is not out of the question. Considering he has 15 RBI in 6 games in September, 22 RBI in 23 games is not out of the question. These are MVP type numbers in PETCO park, the single worst hitting park in major league baseball. I am hearing whispers of the dimensions being changed, which means more HR for Headley! This guy is solidified at 3B for years to come.
Everth Cabrera (2B-SS-3B)
Mr. Cabrera has been an integral part of Padres baseball since December of 2008, when he was selected from the Asheville Tourists (Rockies) after leading the South Atlantic League in stolen bases. He succeeded Luis Rodriguez, and saved us from watching terrible and boring baseball after hitting .255 with 25 SB and routinely making the game exciting before breaking his hamate bone. He has done well this year, stealing 28 bases in 29 attempts. He will go and make amazing plays like the one below, but he seems to miss the routine plays at times.
Jedd Gyorko (2B-3B)
Here is where the real "perplexity" begins, what do we do with Gyorko and Headley? Gyorko is lighting it up in the minors while Headley is lighting it up in the majors? Gyorko finished just one at bat shy of 500, hit 30HR, 100RBI between AA and AAA. The former 2nd rounder has a shot an an excellent career. He can play 2B as well as 3B. He played SS in college but San Diego brass does not think he can play SS well enough.
Alexi Amarista (2B-SS-3B-LF-CF-RF)
Amarista is the perfect "super-sub", acquired in the Ernesto Frieri trade, he is young and has upside, two very good traits. He is very versatile, able to play almost every position. I am sure he could play 1B if he needed to. He is a very good bench piece but not a very good starter.
Start Chase Headley at 3B and Gyorko at 2B.
Acquire Elvis Andrus for Robbie Erlin, Adys Portillo, Edison Rincon, and Nate Frieman.
Start Andrus at SS.
I do feel like Andrus could be dealt to San Diego, maybe for a different package, to make room for Jurickson Profar.
I expect Headley at 3B and Gyorko at 2B, with a SS acquired via trade or FA, with the possibility of a SP and a RF to be added.
- Andrew Cashner (strained lat muscle) and Anthony Bass (shoulder inflammation) combined for 6.2 innings of 3 run ball (2 earned) with 6 strike outs. This is the first time either has pitched since their injuries.
- The Padres are going with a 6-man rotation, with Cashner back, to give workhorses Clayton Richard and Edison Volquez some rest and to see all six pitchers.
- Andrew Werner has had this line: 6IP 2R in all of his major league starts.
- The Padres are not mathematically eliminated from the postseason, but it is unlikely anything happens.
- If the Padres can sweep the Diamondbacks, they pull within one game of third place.
