Padres trade Mike Adams to Rangers

The Texas Rangers have acquired RHP Mike Adams from San Diego in exchange for LHP Robby Erlin and RHP Joe Wieland. Erlin is a power lefty with great secondary stuff. Texas improved their pen earlier this week by getting Koji Uhera for Tommy Hunter and 1B Chris Davis.

Here is my take onn the two prospects we acquired and the Padre we called up:

Robby Erlin: LHP

He projects as a shorter left handed Danny Haren. He has advanced secondary stuff and good control. I really like this kid in San Diego's future rotation.

Joe Wieland: RHP

He actually threw a no hitter last week against the Padres AA affiliate. If you can't beat 'em join 'em. He could end up as a true ace. He is tall and has good control and secondary stuff.

Erik Hammren: RHP

He is the kid we called up from AA who will replace Adams. He has an ERA under one in 65 innings. in A and AA ball.

In other news Ryan Ludwick is close to being dealt. Heath Bell may stay put.

Padres sign Jose Ruiz

The Padres have signed Venezuelan catching prospect Jose Ruiz. Ruiz was supposedly the best catcher out of Latin America this year. The 16-year old is said to have raw power and to be the best defensive catchers out their. The Padres have committed 1.1 million dollars to this young catcher. If San Diego signs C's Austin Hedges and Brett Austin, the Padres will have four catchers that could contribute to a major league club eventually.  If you see Ruiz in the majors, it will be in at least 4 years. Most of these prospects take several years to develop if they do. Ruiz is projected like this: .240 AVG .340 OBP 30 HR great defense.

Was this a good signing?
