Franklin Morales courtesy of
The Boston Red Sox have reportedly acquired LHP Franklin Morales from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for a PTBNL or cash. Morales throws 94.4 MPH and has very high ceiling. My take on this deal is the Sox won big, the only way they can lose this deal is if Morales provides negative value! The Rox will probably get cash to complete the deal. The 25-year old lefty has posted a 3.86 ERA so far this year. He is wild and has walked 8 hitters in 14 innings. I went and looked up the numbers and actually was 0-2 with a 6.28 ERA against us, which means no more wins against the Rockies because of Morales. In 2008 Baseball America rated him as the 8th best prospect in the game and he was looking like a premier, young, front-of-the-rotation guy. He then experienced a move to the bullpen, since then he has posted a 5.17 ERA but in 2009 he took the closers roll for Brian Fuentes, and in 2010 filled in for the injured Huston Street. He saved 10 games through those 2 stretches. Boston also designated Hideki Okijima for assignment and signed RHP Kevin Millwood to a minor-league contract.

  1. Most Rockie fans are down on Morales, and as you say, he hasn't fooled many Padre hitters. But he's young and healthy and the RS are worried about their pitching. So why not pick him up.

By the way, what's your take on trading Bell for more offense in the second half? Who, in your opinion, might be available?

Nice job with your site, Noah. Keep up the good work. I'm the guy who made the Cashman comment a while back.

  2. I agree, it was a good pickup.

I agree with it, the almost no-hitter sealed SD's fate, Jurickson Profar, Domonic Brown, and Jesus Montero would be targets. Chris Hiesy also.(for Ludwick). I could See Adams, Bell, Ludwick and Harang or Mosely(I hope Mosely, I like Harang alot more for some reason.) being dealt. If you deal Adams and Bell, keep Qualls and offer him Arb.

    I really appriciate the comments!

  3. Giving the closer job to Qualls isn't a bad idea. He's a horse who's thrown a lot of innings this year and deserves consideration. If the Padres move Bell, Ludwick and Adams in different directions, or wrap uo two of them in a package deal, they could get catching help AND a couple of offensive guys.

Some of the "experts" on the Padre site are a little sketchy. It's nice to be able to post with someone like yourself who knows the game.
